A Complete Guide to Invisalign

The Invisalign system is an orthodontic system that straightens your teeth without the use of metal wires and brackets. Instead, it uses a series of clear aligner trays to move your teeth into place gradually and gently over time. Just about any patient who needs orthodontic treatment can benefit from the Invisalign system, making it one of the most versatile and convenient options for straightening your smile. In fact, it’s the only treatment that will treat both your upper and lower teeth at the same time!

Unlike traditional braces, the Invisalign system uses a series of custom-made aligners to gently move your teeth into proper alignment. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks at a time, then replaced with the next set in the series. Over time, these aligners will shift your teeth into place, resulting in a straighter and more beautiful smile. Best of all, because the aligners are clear and virtually invisible, no one will even know you’re wearing them – they’ll just see a straighter smile! Plus, because they are easily removable, you can take them out to eat your favorite foods or brush and floss as you normally would, keeping your oral health in check the whole time.

There are many benefits to choosing an Invisalign treatment plan over traditional metal braces, including the following:

  • They are much gentler on teeth and gums
  • You can eat all of your favorite foods without having to work around brackets and wires
  • There are no dietary restrictions during your treatment
  • Your oral hygiene routine won’t change at all throughout your treatment
  • You’ll spend less time in your orthodontist’s office than with traditional braces
  • You’ll have fewer visits to the dentist during treatment
  • Aligners are comfortable, with no irritation or poking around your gums and mouth
  • There are no wires that can cut your mouth or cheeks like with braces
  • Invisalign retainers are clear and barely visible

How Does Invisalign Work?

The clear aligners are custom-made to perfectly fit your teeth and mouth. You’ll wear one set of custom-fit aligners at a time for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will gradually move until they reach the position your doctor has prescribed for you. Generally, you visit our office every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to fifteen months, and the number of aligners worn during treatment is between eighteen and thirty-two, but both will vary from case to case. Since Invisalign’s clear plastic aligners are removable, you can continue to eat your favorite foods while brushing and flossing normally to keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean throughout the course of treatment.
