The Crown Fitting Process at Pharr Road Dentistry: What Atlanta Patients Can Expect

Dental crown premolar tooth assembly process. Medically accurate

If you’ve been told you need a dental crown, you might be wondering what the experience actually looks like from start to finish. Will it take multiple visits? Will it hurt? How long before you’re back to normal? These are the right questions to ask, and the answers might surprise you. Crown technology has changed significantly in recent years, and getting a crown today looks very different from what patients went through even a decade ago.

At Pharr Road Dentistry in Atlanta’s Buckhead district, we’ve upgraded our crown process to use CEREC technology, which means most patients can have their crown designed, created, and placed in a single visit. Dr. Keya Patel walks every patient through what to expect before a single step is taken, so you feel informed and comfortable throughout the experience. Here’s a closer look at exactly what that process looks like.

Why You Might Need a Crown

A dental crown is a custom-fitted restoration that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring both its function and appearance. Our same-day crowns and bridges service addresses a range of situations where a tooth needs more protection than a filling can provide.

Common reasons a crown may be recommended include a tooth with a large cavity, a cracked or fractured tooth, a tooth that has undergone a root canal, or a tooth that is significantly worn down from grinding. In some cases, a crown is also used to anchor a dental bridge or cover a dental implant. Whatever the underlying reason, the goal is always the same: to restore the tooth so it functions and feels natural for years to come.

Step One: Examination and Preparation

Every crown fitting at Pharr Road Dentistry begins with a thorough examination. Dr. Patel will evaluate the affected tooth, review any X-rays, and confirm that a crown is the most appropriate treatment for your situation.

Once treatment is confirmed, the tooth is gently prepared by reshaping it slightly to create a stable surface for the crown to bond to. In the past, this step was followed by messy putty impressions and weeks of waiting. With CEREC technology, that waiting is eliminated entirely. Instead of sending molds to an outside lab, we use a small handheld camera to take a precise 3D digital scan of your tooth directly in the office. The scan is accurate, fast, and far more comfortable than traditional impression materials.

Step Two: Designing the Crown

Once the digital scan is complete, the image is transferred to our in-office design software. Dr. Patel uses this software to design a crown that is custom-shaped to fit your bite, match the contour of your surrounding teeth, and blend naturally with your smile. This step typically takes only a few minutes, and in many cases, you can see a preview of the restoration before it is created.

The ability to design and adjust the crown in real time is one of the most significant advantages of this technology. There is no back-and-forth with a dental laboratory, no uncertainty about fit, and no need for a temporary crown while you wait.

Step Three: Milling and Placement

After the design is finalized, the specifications are sent directly to the in-office milling unit, which carves your crown from a high-quality ceramic block. Research published in PubMed via the National Institutes of Health found that CEREC ceramic restorations demonstrated a survival rate of 94.7% at five years and 85.7% at ten years, performance comparable to traditionally fabricated cast gold restorations. While milling typically takes around 15 minutes, you can relax, catch up on email, or simply rest.

Once the crown is complete, Dr. Patel fits it carefully and makes any final adjustments to ensure your bite feels right. The crown is then bonded in place, and you leave with a permanent restoration the same day you came in. There is no temporary crown to worry about, no sensitivity from an exposed prepared tooth, and no second appointment waiting on your calendar.

What to Expect After Placement

Most patients adjust to their new crown very quickly. Some mild sensitivity around the tooth or gums in the first day or two is completely normal as your mouth adapts to the restoration. This typically resolves on its own within a short period.

You can care for your crown exactly the way you care for your natural teeth: brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and keeping up with routine visits for general dentistry care. Avoiding habits like chewing on ice or using your teeth to open packaging will help your crown last as long as possible. If you grind your teeth at night, Dr. Patel may recommend a custom nightguard to protect both your crown and your surrounding teeth from excessive wear. For patients who need broader restoration work beyond a single tooth, our full mouth restoration services can address multiple concerns as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
