How Long Do Single Unit Implants Last?

Imagine finally replacing that missing tooth with a solution that looks, feels, and functions just like the real thing. You’ve taken a step toward restoring your smile with a single-unit dental implant—an investment in both function and confidence. But as with any investment, you want to know its longevity. Will it last a few years? A lifetime? Single-unit dental implants are known for their durability, but what determines their lifespan?

The good news is with the proper care, implants are one of the longest-lasting dental solutions available. Single-unit dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for missing teeth, offering both durability and a natural look. At Pharr Road Dentistry, we’ve helped countless patients restore their smiles with implants that can last decades. Our experienced team focuses on precision placement and patient education to maximize the lifespan of every implant.

How Long Do Single-Unit Implants Typically Last?

Single-unit implants can last the rest of your life, as they’re made to be stable and maintain structural integrity within your jaw. However, the crown placed over this structure may need to be replaced with wear and tear. Your permanent crown will typically last between 15 and 25 years, at which point it must be replaced with a new one. Some dental providers may recommend replacing your crown more frequently, depending on its material and whether you keep up with expected hygiene practices.

The titanium post that serves as the foundational structure of your implant should last longer than the crown. Titanium is biocompatible, resistant to corrosion, and strong and durable, making it a uniquely fitting choice for a long-term solution. If you need to replace a tooth or want a long-lasting reconstruction solution for your smile, a single-unit dental implant is an excellent choice.

Factors That Affect Implant Longevity

Ultimately, a few factors affect how long the crown on your single-unit implant will last. The following are some of the most prominent factors that affect overall durability:

Oral Hygiene and Maintenance

Brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits are all key to keeping your dental crown in good shape. These also prevent other damage within the oral cavity, keeping bacteria and other unhealthy buildup from causing infections or decay.

Bone Health and Density

Typically, your implant should keep the jawbone healthy and stay relatively stable. However, there are some cases where the jawbone weakens and deteriorates over time, which could make your implant less effective. For example, if your provider tells you that you should get a bone graft and you refuse, your implant will likely be less stable than ideal.

Bite Force and Bruxism

If you’re a patient who constantly grinds and clenches your teeth, including at night, your crowns will wear down more quickly. Patients with TMJD may be more likely to wear down their crowns.

Lifestyle Choices

Smoking, diet, and alcohol consumption can all affect how long your implant crown will last. For example, smoking can increase the risk of gum disease and increase the odds of weakening the implant over time.

Implant Quality

If your implant is made with quality materials and comes from a trusted manufacturer, it is much more likely to function correctly for longer. For example, crowns made of porcelain fused with metal are often found to be the most durable material options. Titanium is generally preferred for the post rooted into the jawbone, but zirconia is also a strong option.

Placement of the Implant

Depending on where your implant is placed, the crown will likely last less or more time. The International Society of Preventative & Community Dentistry notes that implants in the mandibular posterior region of the mouth are more likely to fail.

Patient Health

Health beyond the oral cavity can affect how long your implant lasts. Conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain autoimmune disorders can all increase the risk of a failing implant, for instance.

How well your provider places the implant will also determine how long it lasts, as better surgical placement generally improves how well the implant fuses to the jaw bone. With better surgical practices, the implant is more likely to heal properly and maintain stability for the long term.
