There are four types of sedation used in dentistry:
Oral conscious sedation
Oral conscious sedation, sometimes called oral sedation, is a medication taken orally prior to treatment. Patients cannot fall asleep with oral conscious sedation. Instead, they gain the relaxation benefits of sleep with their body being able to respond to situations as they normally would.
Oral conscious sedation is most commonly provided as a pill taken by the patient about an hour before their dental appointment. Patients abstain from eating or drinking anything during this time. Since the medication takes a while to wear off, patients should not drive themselves home after their treatment.
Nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide is breathed in through a small mask that fits snugly over the nose. The gas is inhaled to reduce anxiety, creating a calming effect.
